Designing PET Can Packaging That Actually Sells: A Practical Guide

Your packaging has about three seconds to convince someone to pick it up. In a refrigerated display case full of options, that's not a lot of time. The good news? If you're using transparent PET cans, you've already got an advantage that aluminum and most glass can't match: your product sells itself.

But "transparent" doesn't mean "no design needed." Here's how to get it right.

Let the Product Do the Talking

The whole point of a transparent can is that people can see what's inside. So don't cover it up with a massive label.

Some guidelines that actually work:

  • Use transparent or minimal labels. Let the beverage color show through. A bright orange juice in a clear can is more compelling than any graphic you could print.
  • Think about the layer effect. If your drink has visible layers — bubble tea with pearls at the bottom, a fruit infusion with floating pieces — position your label so it doesn't block the best part.
  • Consider amber PET for light-sensitive products. Cold brew coffee and some juices degrade in UV light. Amber PET protects the product while still showing it off.

Lid Color Is a Design Decision (Not an Afterthought)

The lid frames your entire product. It's the first thing people notice from above, and it sets the tone:

  • Gold lids signal premium. If you're pricing your product at the top end, this is the move.
  • Silver lids are clean and classic. They work for almost anything.
  • Custom colored lids let you color-code your product line or match your brand. A matcha drink with a green lid, a berry smoothie with a deep red lid — it's a small detail that makes the product feel intentional.

All our PET cans come with aluminum easy-open lids. It's what consumers expect, and it works.

Size Matters More Than You Think

The size of your can communicates something about your product before anyone reads a word:

  • 200-250ml — feels premium, intentional. Good for tasting portions, sample sizes, or high-value products where you want to keep the price accessible.
  • 330ml — the standard. Familiar, comfortable, what people expect from a single-serve beverage.
  • 500ml — value size. Smoothies, meal replacements, anything where more is better.
  • 750-1000ml — sharing format. Cold brew concentrate, family-size juices.

Don't just pick a size based on volume. Think about what size communicates about your brand positioning.

Decoration Options That Actually Work

We offer several decoration methods, and they're not all right for every product:

  • Shrink sleeves — full 360° coverage, vibrant colors. Great for brands that want bold graphics. Just make sure the sleeve doesn't cover the entire can — leave a window so people can see the product.
  • Digital printing — no minimum runs, perfect for limited editions or seasonal products. Want to test a new design without committing to 50,000 units? This is your option.
  • Hot stamping — metallic foil accents. Adds a premium touch without the cost of a full metallic finish.
  • Frosted finishes — gives a matte, luxury feel while keeping the can translucent. Works well for premium water and clear beverages.

Don't Forget E-Commerce

More beverages are being sold online than ever. Your can needs to look good in a photo, not just on a shelf:

  • Transparent products photograph well — the colors pop, the clarity reads as quality.
  • Stackable, durable cans survive e-commerce fulfillment without damage.
  • Think about the unboxing experience. How does it look when someone opens the shipping box?

Sustainability Is Part of the Design Now

Consumers look for this. Make it easy for them:

  • Include the #1 PET recycling symbol — it's expected now, not optional.
  • If you're using rPET, say so on the label. "Made with 50% recycled content" is a selling point, not a footnote.
  • Less ink = easier recycling. A minimalist design isn't just aesthetically cleaner — it's genuinely better for the recycling stream.
